Welcome to the Imperial Furniture Collection!
With more than 165,000 objects the Imperial Furniture Collection is the largest furniture collection in the world. Here you can learn lots about furniture and design, but what is more you take part in entertaining workshops and children’s guided tours.
What does this name mean, you might ask.
“Hofmobilien” is the most difficult word. “Mobilie” – “movables” in English – is a term not only for furniture but also includes objects you need for everyday life (e.g. candelabras or mirrors). The word “Hof” – “court” – shows that the “movables” were owned by the imperial family. And “depot” means “stores”. This is where all the furniture was stored that the imperial family didn’t need at that particular time.
The museum shows you old, interesting and beautiful pieces of furniture that once belonged to an emperor or empress.
